The Duskbloods vs Elden Ring: Which Should You Play?

The Duskbloods vs Elden Ring compared: PvPvE multiplayer versus open-world solo, Switch 2 exclusive versus multiplat, match-based Virtue culling versus 100-hour exploration — and who each game is actually for.

comparisonvs

TL;DR: Elden Ring is the best pick if you want a huge single-player open world you can live in for months. The Duskbloods is the better fit if you want FromSoftware combat re-cut as 8-player PvPvE rounds on Nintendo Switch 2 — shorter sessions, human rivals, and a launch that is still dateless as of October 2026. They share Miyazaki DNA, not the same loop.

Quick Comparison

Core loop 8-player PvPvE Dusk Battle (4 phases) Open-world solo exploration + bosses

If you only read one line: Elden Ring is a place. The Duskbloods is a match.

1. Structure: Open World vs Dusk Battle

Elden Ring drops you into the Lands Between with almost no rails. You can ignore story beats for 40 hours, farm a side dungeon, or walk into a late-game region and get deleted. Mastery is personal and mostly private.

The Duskbloods runs on Dusk Battle flow: up to 8 Bloodsworn enter the Lands of Dusk, farm Virtue, survive the Grail’s culling in Phases II–III, then the last three fight for the Blood Bestowal. There is a start, a clock, and other humans who want your spot. See the full phase breakdown on the gameplay page.

Who wins: depends on whether you want freedom or structure.

2. Multiplayer: Optional vs Mandatory Core

In Elden Ring, multiplayer is a spice. You can finish the entire game offline and never touch it.

In The Duskbloods, PvPvE is the product. You fight AI trespassers and other Bloodsworn at once — the hybrid loop we unpacked in What Is The Duskbloods PvPvE?. FromSoftware also confirmed skill-based matchmaking so new players meet new players (matchmaking notes).

There is a single-player mode, but anyone comparing “is it like Elden Ring?” usually means the multiplayer fight — and that fight has no Elden Ring equivalent.

3. Character & Build Identity

The Duskbloods Elden Ring
Identity Fixed Bloodsworn (12+ promised; 6 in network test roster) Build-your-own Tarnished
Weapons Signature kit per character (saber+SMG, axe, katana, etc.) Hundreds of weapons, Ashes of War
Specials Blood Arts + Aspects Sorceries, Incantations, Skills
Wild card Kin compacts (Ring / Blade / Eye circles) Spirit Ashes, Great Runes, summons

Elden Ring wins on sandbox freedom. The Duskbloods wins on readable kits and counterplay — if you see Albert’s jeweled saber, you already know the plan. Full kits: Bloodsworn page · Kin system.

4. Difficulty & “Fairness”

Elden Ring difficulty is mostly PvE knowledge: learn the boss, bring the right tool, or out-level it. Cheese is a feature.

The Duskbloods difficulty is PvPvE variance: a clean duel can turn into a third-party ambush, a trespasser wave, or a culling because someone else farmed better. Winning is partly skill, partly Virtue tempo, partly not being the player everyone decides to delete.

If losing to other people tilts you harder than losing to Malenia, stay with Elden Ring.

5. Time & Platform Reality

  • Elden Ring: available now, every current platform, 80–150 hour playthroughs, huge mod/creator scene.
  • The Duskbloods: Switch 2 exclusive, still officially 2026 with no release day (see the release-date tracker), built for shorter sessions and online population health.

You cannot “just buy The Duskbloods this weekend.” You can buy Elden Ring tonight. That alone settles many comparisons.

Who Should Play What

Choose Elden Ring if you want

  • A massive solo open world and a story you can soak in
  • Offline play, mods, and endless build experimentation
  • Combat you can learn at your own pace

Choose The Duskbloods if you want

  • FromSoftware combat tuned for 8-player PvPvE
  • Shorter, sharper matches with human reads and alliances
  • Switch 2 exclusives and the next Miyazaki multiplayer swing

Play both if

You like Souls combat and also like Hunt / Tarkov-style tension. They do not really compete for the same hour of your week.

FAQ

Is The Duskbloods basically Elden Ring 2?

No. Shared studio and director DNA, different format. Elden Ring is a solo open-world RPG; The Duskbloods is a match-based PvPvE action game.

Is The Duskbloods like Elden Ring Nightreign?

Closer in spirit (multiplayer-focused FromSoftware experiment), but Duskbloods is its own PvPvE game on Switch 2 — not a Nightreign expansion.

Does The Duskbloods have the same build depth as Elden Ring?

Unlikely at launch. Expect fewer weapons, but denser per-character kits, Kin compacts, and blood history choices inside a match.

Can I play The Duskbloods on PC?

No. It is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive (as of October 2026).

Which is better for beginners?

If you are new to FromSoftware: Elden Ring teaches at your pace. If you are new but want multiplayer: The Duskbloods has SBMM to protect first-timers — see beginner matchmaking.
